Q: What is the purpose of a Palki?
A: Palki is where the Guru resides, when the Guru is carried from one place to another and also when in theDarbar hall. Sikhs regard the holy scriptures as their living Guru. The Guru Granth Sahib is placed on theManji Sahib – a raised platform covered by the Palki – a canopy, to show its importance. The Guru Granth Sahib is covered by a piece of beautiful material called a Rumalla and flowers may also be placed round the Guru. Around the top of the canopy is engraved the ‘Waheguru’ which means ‘Wonderful Lord’ or such other words from the holy scriptures.
Q: What is a Palki Sahib?
A: Palki Sahib is a Punjabi word which describes the structure housing the Manji Sahib and which form part of the Guru’s platform (Takhat) or seating. The Palki may be integrated into the platform and form a canopy above the Guru’s Manji Sahib The Palki Sahib is normally at least 2 metres wide, 2 metres deep and 2.5 metres high, made of wood and holding lighting and high decorated surfaces enhancing the Guru’s seating.
Not all Gurdwaras have a Palki Sahib for the Guru’s seating. The most famous Sikh Gurdwara, Sri Harimander Sahib for example does not have a Palki; while most Gurdwara’s in the west have a Palki Sahib for the Guru’s seating.
